Moving Tips
- Fill out a "Change of Address" form with the post office, at least 2 weeks before moving. You can get a form at your local post office branch, or take care of everything online at www.usps.com.
- Notify any company or organization that sends you regular mail. This includes the newspapers, the bank, credit card companies, magazines, catalog companies, charities, etc.
- Make a list of individual people that will need to know you're moving.
- Make arrangements for all utilities to be disconnected at your old home and connected at your new home. Give yourself an extra day of lead-time for both to prevent the chance you're without power or water for a while.
- Check insurance coverage for everything that you're moving. Make sure you know exactly what damages the moving company will cover.
- If you're moving any large appliances, develop a plan for their move (eg. How's the fridge getting out of the house?). Clean out smaller appliances.
- Estimate the weight of everything that you're moving. Many moving companies bill by the pound.
- Have one box that is labeled "Open First." This should contain anything you will need the first couple of days in your new home - trash bags, soap, toolbox, cups, plates and silverware, paper and pen, water, non-perishable food, toothbrush and toothpaste, etc.
